About

dArwin_TrashNet

In the future, we hope for our project to leave a lasting impact on our campus and community through long-term improvement of waste management. We aim for students to be not only more mindful of their waste, but also to have more awareness of the environment and sustainability.

Through this program, the student population will be given the chance to see how environmentalism can be practiced on a campus-sized scale and how their efforts can make a difference if they go the extra step to dispose of waste and practice environmental awareness. In addition to primarily implementing trash separation and food waste donation in our school, we also hope to inspire the next generation to be environmental leaders by setting an example for other schools and, ultimately, our community.

Mechanics

dArwin’s impact, an AI created by one of our researchers, has a lot of potential in improving waste management. "TrashBot", a similar AI program made by Clean Robotics, is one of the existing bots that help towards the cause. With 6 million dollars in funding, TrashBot is currently the most competitive waste sorting AI on the market, being 300% more efficient than humans. Now here’s the caveat. This million-dollar company? We beat them. While their "TrashBot" has a 95% accuracy, we have 98% that has been tested in realistic conditions, surpassing the top-performing AI on the entire market. What's unique about dArwin is that corporations like Clean Robotics create cost barriers to effective waste management by charging thousands of dollars, we are the very first group to release this technology publicly at no cost. This program is on GitHub and Kaggle, collaborative software-sharing websites where not only does anyone have access to our work, but they can actively work on and improve it even after our project ends. Our program is a solid foundation that forwards the advancement of waste management technology.

Single-stream vs. Multi-stream
